Click Here to do your FETE Experience thorugh GEAR UP in Wayne Westland, Willow Run or Ypsilanti.

You are invited to join Eastern Michigan University’s GEAR UP Initiative. EMU GEAR UP is currently hiring tutors and seeking volunteer mentors for the Fall and Winter Semesters.

Although all three GEAR UP high schools have programs tailored to meet the needs of each school, the following information will give you a general idea of what to expect.  Please contact a site coordinator to learn more about the specific tasks of a tutor or mentor.

What do tutors do?
The tutors' main job is to get kids excited about math, writing and reading. They will be placed at a high school where they will be paired with students for the semester. All of the students are in ninth grade. Each week, tutors deliver lessons that include games and activities that focus on skills in:

• Reading
• Writing
• Comprehension
• Math

Additionally, tutors will participate in tutor training and team meetings where they will learn a variety of tutoring strategies and reflect on their tutoring experiences. In addition, successful tutors:

• Enjoy helping youth become successful in their classes.
• Can commit to tutoring the same hours each week.
• Can commit to at least a semester of service, but preferably a year.

Where are the tutoring sites?
Currently we have school and community partnerships in Ypsilanti, Willow Run, and Wayne Westland.

How will tutors be chosen?
Selection of tutors will be based upon completion of an application, an on campus interview, and weekly availability.

How will tutors be placed?
The placement of tutors will be based upon each tutor's availability, needs of the participating sites, and transportation considerations.

How are tutors scheduled?
Tutors work one-on-one or in small groups with ninth grade students. Each tutoring session lasts approximately 45 minutes per tutee. There is time left over for record-keeping while at the site.
Tutors will attend a mandatory orientation and training session plus monthly trainings during the academic year. After placement at a site, tutors will write outcomes after each session. Tutors will carry out a formal assessment of each student at the beginning and end of the school year.
The most common tutoring time slots are 7am-11am, 8am-12pm, 11am-4pm, 11pm-5pm, and 12-6pm. Some sites also start and end on the half hour within the above time frames. Schedules are flexible based on the need of the site.

How much time will be required?
The time commitment varies from week to week, but most tutors work 4-10 hours per week. Tutors need to commit to the same tutoring hours each week for the entire semester. Additionally, tutors will spend time on planning and attending the monthly meetings with the Site Coordinator & other tutors from the same site.

How will tutors be paid?
The pay rate for tutors is $8-$10 per hour. This includes all orientation and training sessions, team meetings, and tutoring sessions. Payment will be made according to terms established by Eastern Michigan University.

How will tutors get to their sites?
At this time, tutors are required to provide their own transportation. The GEAR UP Site Coordinator will help you find ways to carpool with other tutors.
